Symbolism and its application for interpretation is a powerful tool for Archaeology
and archaeological anthropological studies. In this study, symbolism has been used to
understand the relevance of symbols found in Scottish Cemetery of Calcutta (Kolkata). Headstones and epitaphs containing many commonly used symbols like Cross and Fleur-de-lis and at the same time rare and culture specific symbols like Triquetra and Ouroboros throw light on new perspectives for explanation and relevance of symbols in mortality of life. Symbols play a dual role in understanding life, including the cultural relevance with historical context is the main focus of this study.
