Fatigue Strength of butt Welds

A common welding joint is butt joint which will introduce (a) residual stresses (b) stress concentration and (c) distortion. All these factors will affect the strength of the joint. In this paper the effect of distortion and the way to take this into consideration in evaluating the fatigue strength are discussed.
