Analysis of Effect of Cutting Parameters on Loss of Abrasive Particles in Grinding

Grinding is one of the most important finishing operations and useful too. The loss of abrasives from the grinding wheel is undesired but unavoidable. Selection of the optimum parameters for grinding must incorporate effective utilization of i) the available energy ii) the strength and hardenss of the abrasive grits. To meet this end, an investigation has been initated in the present work to develop a model and formulate a mathematical expression involving the depth of cut, cutting speed, feed rate and strength of the material of the grit. Assuming the shape and dustribution of the abrasive grits from rational intuition along with some simplicity, a force and stress analysis of the grits has been made to derive an equation involving the three grinding parameters. For a given wheel specification, an optimum value of one cutting parameter can be determined from this equation, by fixing the other two parameters each at a given value.
