The Selection of Electrodes
Subscribe/Renew Journal
This paper attempts to formulate the basis of selecting the correct electrode for a specific weld. It relates primarily to the electrodes used for welding the low-carbon steels used in wagon-building, but the principles would apply to any other class of work.
The factors involved can be grouped under the following heads: (a) Suitability, (b) Performance and (c) Economy. An electrode must be rated under each of the factors and the rating compared with that of an alternative choice.
Some opinions have also been advanced about the choice to be made. How the factors are to be assessed, at what stage the selection must be made and by whom, and the effects that the choice will have.
