Flood Control Scheme
Subscribe/Renew Journal
Highest peak discharge of 6,50,000 cu. sees has been recorded both during floods of 1913 and 1935. For considering any flood control scheme by a system of reservoir, it is not only necessary to have knowledge of peak discharge, but it is all the more imperative to have a close knowledge of the volume of the flood flow. It has been experienced that heavy concentrated rainfall in Hazaribag, Bagador, Ramgarh, Giridih, etc. in the Damodar Velley brings sudden flood in the lower Damodar high peak flow, but further continuance of rainfall in the catchment does not necessarily increase the peak discharge proportionately; it elongates the duration of the flood and puts constant pressure on the embankments and causes greater damage in the case of breach than flood with higher discharge of shorter duration.
