Low Temperature Carbonisation and Combustion

"When average bituminous coal containing 25 to 35 per cent, volatile matter is carbonised under low-temperature conditions at say 840° to 1110° (450° to 600°C), the yield obtained per ton of coal, with external heating of the retorts, is about 3,750 to 6,000 cub. ft. of rich gas (700 to 850 B.Th.U.s per cub. ft.), 2 to 3 galls of light oil scrubbed from the gas, 17 to 20 galls of low-temperature tar, and 14 to 15 ewt. (70 to 75 per cent.) solid smokeless fuel, containing 10 to 12 per cent volatile matter.
