Noise is now recognised as a major environmental factor having adverse effects on the physical and mental health of the community. The occupational health hazards of noise had been studied quite earlier and regulations were evolved to control it in most industrialised countries. However legislation to control environmental noise has been rather slow even in affluent nations of the world. The lack of standards for quantifying environmental noise, research gap regarding the effects of noise on quality of life and techno-economic difficulties of implementing noise control measures contributed to this delay.
