The problems of urban development are engaging the attention of engineers as also of sociologists and administrators all over the world. In Calcutta these problems are seen in an aggravated form. Their solution is a matter of national importance. The programme of developing Calcutta's housing, transport and civic amenities is in fact receiving intensive attention. It is an undertaking in which the State and Union Governments need the cooperation of everyone who can help, especially the leaders of the engineering profession.
