Subscribe/Renew Journal
The Hooghly-The most important river in West Bengal is the Hooghly. Its upper reach is known as the Bhagirathi. In the 14th century, the Bhagirathi was the main outfall channel of the Ganga waters into the Bay of Bengal. Its lower course, below Calcutta past Kalighat, is still known as the Adi (original) Ganga. The importance of the Hooghly is due to the fact, that the Port of Calcutta is situated on its bank.
