Seed Dispersal Mechanisms in Semi-evergreen Forests of Mulshi Region in the Northern Part of Western Ghats
Subscribe/Renew Journal
The semi-evergreen forest fragments in Mulshi area were studied to assess relative importance of dispersal mechanisms in the woody flora. Trees showing zoochorous mode of dispersal (Memecylon umbellatum , Xantolis tomentosa) dominated the forests. The scandent shrubs were also predominantly zoochorous. However , the shrubs in the understorey were mostly autochorous (Thelepaepale ixiocephala). The percentage of anemochorous species (Heterophragma quadriloculare , Terminalia crenulata) was very low compared to the neotropical and paleotropical dry forests. The results indicate importance offauna for the regeneration and growth of these semi-evergreen forests.
