





Conservation and Management of Biodiversity in Indian Forests - New Eco-development Approach

Beginning with a brief description of the biodiversity of flora and fauna of Indin forests, the author has provided an introduction to its conservation and management since the Indian Forest Act 1865 upto the various measures adopted after Independence. The latest is the Biological Diversity Act, 2003 aimed at ecodevelopment around National Parks and Sanctuaries. Its objectives, activities and programmes have been briefly stated. The author also gives his own observation about its impact and suggests as to how this strategy should be developed further. In conclusion, it has been stated that this ecodevelopment approach with peoples participation has the best chance for sustainable management of protectd areas.
